Brazil does not need foreigners to coach its national football team, President Luiz Eneasio Lula da Silva on Tuesday led Selecao after the appointment of Carlo Anseloti of Real Madrid. Italian Anseloti became the first non-Brazil after 1965 to take over the Brazilian national team’s reins on Monday, which he is expecting to lead the World Cup’s glory next year. According to a video aired in Brazil’s media, “honestly, I have nothing against being a foreigner … which I think we have coaches in Brazil who are able to lead Selecao.”
Lula, a football enthusiast, expressed doubts about the possible appointment of Anseloti in the past, which had been on the card for years.
“He has never been a national coach of Italy … Why does he not solve the problems of Italy, which was not even eligible for the 2022 World Cup?” The President said in 2023.
On Tuesday, he described ancelotti as a “great technician” and said he hoped that Italian could “help the Brazilian team, qualify for the first World Cup, and then, to win it if possible.”
Selecao is ranked fourth in the qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
It has 21 points from 14 matches, lower than Ecuador, Uruguay and World Champion Argentina.
The top six Latin American teams will qualify for the 2026 program.
