Government to promote Indian tea with local spices

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday said a senior official that the government has asked its agencies, tea boards of India and Spice Board of India to join hands in marketing brand India globally.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said on Wednesday that he has instructed the tea board to develop a strategy to bring the domestic tea industry to the market on a large scale. He also talked about promoting “tea literacy” through various publicity and awareness programs so that people would better appreciate various specialties and nuances of Indian tea.

Both boards fall under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

He directed the tea board to find out the possibility of launching certification courses in tasting tea with the aim of making youth skills and finding the possibility of promoting tourism in the region.

Barthwal said at the International Tea Day Conference held at Vanajya Bhavan, “Tea board is trying to take steps to set up a center for tea tasting certification syllabus in the country.” International Tea Day is celebrated on 21 May.

The government is eager to promote the tea industry on a large scale.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is currently visiting the United States, said in a post on X: “Most of us can not imagine one dawn without our cup of tea. I am one of them! Another official said that the tea sector has tremendous export capacity and on an annual basis increased by 11% to $ 920 million in FY 25.

Assam, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are major tea producing states. More than 80% of the tea produced in the country is consumed domesticly. The main varieties of Indian tea include Darjeeling, Assam, Nilgiri and Kangra.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jetin Prasad emphasized the importance of tea in the socio-economic fabric of the country and emphasized the need to detect the innovative routes of branding and Indian tea marketing to strengthen his position as world leader in tea exports.

He instigated the Indian tea industry to achieve maximum heights in the export scenario and targeted the youth with new and innovative varieties of tea, especially towards youth and niche markets. He also emphasized the fact that we need to ensure the best features for all stakeholders in the entire supply chain that from producer to consumer.
