Sen. Arlen Specter was an "irreplaceable" force who approached politics and life with grit and determination, a who's who of politicians and others said Tuesday at the longtime senator's funeral. John Doe gets his identity By Elisha Anderson Detroit Free Press DETROIT It was an unexpected birthday gift: a man living as "John D108 Doe" for years got his identity back Monday. As he celebrated at an adult foster care home in Detroit wearing a birthday hat and eating sausage, hamburgers, French fries, chocolate cake and ice cream several family members read an article published in the Detroit Free Press that day and recognized the man. They said he is 46-year-old Maurice Williams, a Detroit man who went missing several months after his mother Mary "Nanny" Brown died in 2008.

She had been his primary caregiver until her death. After disappearing, it appears Williams, who is severely developmentally disabled, was moved into an adult foster care home after being found on the street. No one knew his identity, and he became "John D108 Doe" in court files. His field guardian, who has been involved in his care since May, contacted the Free Press in her quest to finally find out who the man is. It didn't take long for Williams' family to see the article.

His cousin Olivia Williams, 52, of Detroit, made arrangements to leave work early Monday to meet with Kathleen White-Montgomery, the owner of Guardianship Service and the man's legal guardian. "It's been so long," she told White-Montgomery before breaking down in tears. Family said they filed a missing persons report with police, repeatedly checked with the morgue and called nursing homes in case he ended up there. They ran into dead ends. It's unclear when Williams will be reunited with his family members.

White-Montgomery said she wants to be careful for his sake and isn't sure if he will recognize them. ANTHONY J. GUARINO Yannantuono Burr Davis Yorktown Funeral Home Sharpe Funeral Home SBSyV 945 E. Main St. 584 Gramatan Ave.
