FAQs

Should you answer robo calls? ›

We suggest first that you do not answer any calls from unknown numbers, but if you do, explain that your telephone number is being spoofed and that you did not actually make any calls. You can also place a message on your voicemail letting callers know that your number is being spoofed.

What happens if you call a robocaller back? ›

When you call back a spam number, you're playing directly into the scammer's hands. You could expose sensitive data on the call or make yourself a target for further scam attempts.

What is a robocall warning? ›

A robocall warning is an indication from your phone that you might be receiving a scam call. You will see these robocaller warnings where the contact name or phone number would usually be displayed when receiving a call.

What is a robocaller number? ›

A robocall is a call that delivers pre-recorded messages through auto-dialing software to millions of people each day. If you answer your phone and hear a recorded message instead of a real person speaking, you are listening to a robocall.

What happens if you accidentally answer a robocall? ›

If you accidentally answer a spam call, scammers know your number is connected to a real person and can target you with more spam calls. These targeted spam calls will try to trick you into giving up your personal information which allows cybercriminals to steal your money, your identity and even your voice.

Is it better to decline or not answer spam calls? ›

It's better to ignore spam calls. When you decline a call, it can alert the spammer that your phone number is active, prompting them to call you again. If you use a call-blocking tool that uses caller ID, you should never answer calls labelled as spam.

Can a robocall hack your phone? ›

A robocall can't hack your phone. However, scammers and other threat actors can use them to trick you into downloading malware on your device. For example, a robocall may trick you into visiting a malicious website designed to deliver Trojans or spyware.

Can someone steal your information by answering a call? ›

Can you get hacked by answering a phone call? It's impossible to get hacked by simply answering a phone call made through your network service provider. But that doesn't mean a phone call can't be exploited to compromise your security via a social engineering attack.

What happens if you press 2 on a spam call? ›

No. All pressing 2 does is let them know that they have reached a working phone number, and will increase the number of spam calls you get. The only way is to block the call, and when they call from another number, block that one, as well.

Does blocking spam calls help? ›

Call blocking can help stop robocalls from scammers. But some robocalls might still get through. If you get an illegal robocall, hang up and don't call back. Don't press a number, which could lead to more robocalls.

Does *61 block unwanted calls? ›

If you have a digital home phone with AT&T, *61 blocks unwanted calls as part of their free Call Blocking service. Press *61 then the “call” button to add the last call you received to your blocked call list. To stop receiving calls from all private numbers (calls without caller ID), dial *77.

How to stop robocalls for free? ›

The National Do Not Call Registry was created by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to stop unwanted sales calls. It's free to register your home or mobile phone number. The Registry is a list that tells telemarketers what numbers not to call and is only effective to the degree that these companies comply.

Why shouldn't you answer robocalls? ›

If you answer the phone and stay on the line until the scammer says something, it notes that your phone is in service. Even if you ask, no one will take you off the list or add you to a 'do not call' list. You'll end up getting more calls from more scammers. The best thing you can do is not answer the call at all.

What happens when you answer a spam call and they hang up? ›

You'll be targeted by even more scammers

Answering just one spam call is a signal to scammers that you are willing to pick up the phone. So they'll keep calling you, sometimes from different phone numbers, trying to get you to answer again. They'll try different schemes, too, as they think you might be an easy target.

How did robocalls get my number? ›

“800”, “888”, and “900” numbers are another way for telemarketers to obtain your phone number. When you call these numbers, your phone number may be captured with a system called “Automatic Number Identification” or ANI. ANI uses equipment that automatically identifies and stores the number from which you are dialing.

Is it better to block or ignore spam calls? ›

A good way to deal with unwanted calls is to block them. Blocking software or devices can stop a lot of the unwanted calls you get — like scam calls and illegal robocalls — before they reach you. Cell phones, home phones that make calls over the internet, and landlines each have their own call-blocking options.

Will you get more if you answer spam calls? ›

You'll be targeted by even more scammers

Answering just one spam call is a signal to scammers that you are willing to pick up the phone.

Should I let robocalls go to voicemail? ›

Here are some robocall consumer tips, provided by the FCC

Don't answer calls from unknown numbers. Let them go to voicemail. If the caller claims to be from a legitimate company or organization, hang up and call them back using a valid number found on their website or on your latest bill if you do business with them.
