

Nominated Chief Justice BR Gavai
Nominated Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai said on Sunday that he would not take any kind of post after retirement. Describing the Constitution as supreme, he put an end to which of the Parliament or judiciary.
CJI post will take over on 14 May
Justice Gawai will assume the post of Chief Justice of the country on 14 May and he will be the first Buddhist to reach the post. He said in an informal conversation with reporters at his residence here that the top court judge Pahalgam was shocked to hear about the terrorist attack.
Talked on issues like statements against judiciary
He also referred to the full court meeting called by him due to the absence of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna. Justice Gawai spoke on issues ranging from pending cases to vacancies in courts, meeting common people including political leaders and statements against the judiciary.
The court cannot remain separate when the country is in crisis
He said, ‘When the country is in crisis, the Supreme Court cannot remain separate. We are also part of the country. In response to questions asked about the statement of political leaders and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, that Parliament is supreme, he said, ‘The Constitution is supreme. A bench of 13 judges in the Keshavanand Bharti case has said the same.
I have no political ambition- Gawai
On the question related to accepting political posts like Governor after retirement by judges, Justice Gavai said, ‘I have no political ambition. I will not take any position after retirement.
The unity and intimacy of the country realized- Gawai
He said that the post of Governor for former Chief Justice is below the post of Chief Justice according to the protocol. Justice Gawai recalled her recent visit to Manipur, saying that an old woman welcomed her in her house and this made her realize the unity and intimacy of the country.
Gawai said that the judges are also citizens of the country and after knowing about the gruesome incident in Pahalgam, he consulted the Chief Justice Khanna and convened a full court meeting to decide to issue a statement by the apex court to mourn the deaths. (With language input)
